Casual, asking — 는데?

With a question mark, the setup becomes a prompt.

The speaker lays down the background and then asks the other person to react to it — this is the situation, so? It is halfway between a statement and a question, which is exactly why English has trouble with it.

Between friends this can be genuinely curious or lightly challenging, and the grammar does not distinguish. Tone and relationship do.

In group content you will hear it constantly when someone is pushing back without committing to a full objection.

Polite, asking — 는데요?

The gentlest of the four and the safest with people you do not know well.

It raises a situation and invites a response without asserting anything, which makes it useful for checking, clarifying, or disagreeing carefully.

This is the form to reach for when you need to question something a senior person said. It puts the background on the table and lets them draw the conclusion, rather than stating your own.

If you take one production habit from this page, make it this: when you would say a blunt sentence, end it on 는데요 instead and stop.
