Learn Korean from what you are already watching

Korwid puts the reading, the real pronunciation and the speech level under the Korean subtitle — on the video, while it plays.

오빠, 저 사실 그때 좋아했거든요.Polite

oppa, jeo sasil geuttae joahaetgeodeunyo

I actually liked you back then.

Ends in ‑거든요 — 해요체. She is being courteous, not formal.

Three lines, not a translation

The subtitle stays where it is. Korwid adds what you cannot get from the Korean line alone, and nothing else.

  • Line 1 — the Korean, split into words
Word boundaries are marked so you can tell where one word ends. A speech-level badge sits inline at the end.
  • Line 2 — the reading
Revised Romanization, or the spoken form once the sound changes are applied. You choose which one.
  • Line 3 — the English
The subtitle track's own English line, kept as a fallback rather than a crutch.

Korean is not read the way it is spelled

Seven sound changes turn the written line into the one you actually hear. Korwid applies them to every line, automatically.

  • Liaison — the final consonant moves right
  • Tensification — plain consonants harden
  • Nasalization — stops become nasals
  • Lateralization — ㄴ and ㄹ merge
  • Aspiration — ㅎ fuses instead of vanishing
  • Palatalization — ㄷ and ㅌ before 이
  • Contraction in casual speech
Written → spoken

좋아했거든요

reads as joahaetgeodeunyo

The seven rules, one at a time →

You can hear the words. You cannot hear the distance.

Korean marks how close two people are in almost every sentence ending. The badge names it, so you are not guessing.

  • Formal
합쇼체 — ‑습니다/‑ㅂ니다. News, announcements, speaking to strangers.
  • Polite
해요체 — ‑아요/‑어요. Everyday courtesy with people you are not close to.
  • Casual
해체 — plain endings. Close friends, family, or someone younger.

When the ending is ambiguous, no badge is drawn. A missing badge is better than a wrong one. How the three levels work →

Words you can actually look up

A conjugated verb is not in the dictionary. Tap a word and Korwid gives you the form that is.

들으니까듣다

The eight irregular patterns are handled, so the ones that change shape still resolve.

Where it works

YouTube
Works as soon as you install it, on videos that have a Korean subtitle track.
Netflix
An optional permission you grant yourself in the popup. It is not requested at install, and it is not finished yet.

Not supported: YouTube Shorts, live streams and picture-in-picture. Videos without Korean subtitles are skipped. Korwid is a desktop Chrome extension — we are not affiliated with YouTube or Netflix.

What happens to the text

Subtitle text is sent to our servers for analysis, and is discarded immediately after the response. What remains on our servers is a hash of the text and the analysis result.
