Why the speed is in characters, not words
English typing speed is quoted in words per minute, where a “word” is counted as five keystrokes. That conversion does not survive the trip to Korean: one Hangul block takes two or three keystrokes and stands for a whole syllable, so five keystrokes is somewhere between one and three blocks depending on the letters.
Korean typing tests therefore count 타수 — strokes, reported per minute. This tool reports characters per minute for the same reason. A comfortable conversational pace is around 150; Korean office workers routinely clear 400.
If the keyboard itself is the new part
Start on the on-screen Hangul keyboard, where every key carries its QWERTY legend and nothing is timed. Come back here once your fingers know where ㅁ and ㅏ live.
Consonants sit under the left hand and vowels under the right, so most syllables alternate hands. That is the layout doing its job, not a coincidence.
